Pakistan has one of the largest youth populations in the world, yet its universities increasingly lack structured, non-partisan platforms for open discussion on public policy, political economy, and institutional reform. Campus discourse is often dominated by ideological, populist, or authoritarian narratives, leaving students with limited exposure to liberal ideas such as individual liberty, rule of law, economic freedom, and accountable governance. This absence creates a vacuum in which illiberal thinking goes unchallenged and intellectual pluralism continues to shrink.
This initiative seeks to address this gap by expanding Students for Economic and Social Affairs (SESA) into a nationwide student network operating in at least 60 universities across Pakistan. Through structured study circles, speaker sessions, debates, and leadership training, SESA will provide students with safe, ideas-based spaces to critically engage with policy challenges using evidence and liberal frameworks rather than ideology or partisanship.
The impact of this initiative will be both immediate and long-term. In the short term, thousands of students will gain exposure to alternative perspectives and develop the confidence to question illiberal narratives through reasoned dialogue. In the long term, the project will cultivate a pipeline of reform-oriented student leaders who carry these ideas into careers in academia, media, civil society, and public service strengthening Pakistan’s intellectual defenses against illiberalism.
Without this initiative, students who are already receptive to liberal ideas will remain isolated and unorganized, lacking the support, mentorship, and platforms needed to sustain engagement. Universities will continue to produce graduates with limited exposure to open debate and institutional thinking, allowing illiberal narratives to persist unchallenged. This project ensures that Pakistan’s next generation is equipped to engage with ideas peacefully, critically, and constructively.
